Fast broadband subscriptions on the rise

The first half of 2010 saw a considerable rise in the popularity of fast broadband subscriptions. At the end of June, approximately 52 per cent of all broadband subscriptions had a download speed of at least 2 Mbps, whereas the figure was six percentage points smaller at the end of 2009. Of fixed broadband subscriptions, the number of those with download speed of 4 to 24 Mbps grew in particular.

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions reached the number of broadband subscriptions implemented by DSL technology. Of all broadband subscriptions, approximately 43 per cent had been implemented by means of DSL technology, and about 43 per cent by means of mobile broadband. At the end of June, the number of broadband subscriptions totalled 2.7 million.

First the younger, then the older

The younger age groups are more likely to use the internet for communication, listening to music and watching television programmes and video clips. For example, less than half in the age group under 30 listen to music online, whereas only one in five in the age group of 50+ does so. Instead, the older age groups do not fall behind the young with respect to the more traditional uses, such as information search and the use of electronic services. If households have an internet connection, at least 90 per cent use it, irrespective of age, several times a week in their spare time and 75 per cent use it daily.

Watching audiovisual content online

Watching audiovisual content via the internet is still held back by the difficulty of using them. More than a third regard watching audiovisual content as troublesome. The older the person, the more likely she or he is to think that it is troublesome to watch audiovisual content. On the other hand, the content provided via internet is not regarded as interesting enough, which was highlighted in the replies of the young. Approximately a third do not regard the provided content as interesting.
