Competition low in the delivery of letters and newspapers

Compared to other Nordic countries or many major EU countries, like Germany and the United Kingdom, competition in the Finnish market for addressed items of correspondence, magazines and newspapers is relatively low.

In practice, Itella Posti Oyj has a monopoly in the delivery of items of correspondence and magazines in mainland Finland. Itella also holds a large share of the market for newspaper delivery. The alternative to Itella's services is newspapers' own delivery organisations.

In the markets for parcel and unaddressed postal delivery services, competition is reasonably effective and there are several alternative businesses. However, Itella's market share in these postal delivery categories is still 50–60%. The markets can be considered concentrated but they are well-poised for becoming more competitive.
