New programming licences bring more HD options

Published 26.04.2018

The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) has granted new television programming licences to Discovery Networks Finland Oy and Eurosport SAS Oy. The new licences boost HD channel offering in Finland.

Eurosport SAS was granted a licence for an HD pay-TV channel. The channel will be available in DNA’s terrestrial network.

Discovery Networks Finland Oy was granted a licence for the TV5 HD channel. The channel will be free-to-view and available in DNA's terrestrial and cable TV networks.

The new programming licences for the terrestrial network were granted for DVB-T2 broadcasting technology. Finland will transition to fully DVB-T2-based terrestrial broadcasting by March 31, 2020.

Consumers planning to buy a TV set for terrestrial broadcasts are recommended to make sure that they purchase a device with a DVB-T2 tuner. The safest choice is an Antenna Ready HD tested television or digital set-top box. The test ensures that the television set is capable of receiving all available terrestrial TV services. The programming licences are valid until the end of the current licence period, which ends on 10 January 2027.

FICORA grants licences on the condition that there is sufficient broadcasting capacity. If there is not sufficient capacity for all applicants or if granting a licence could have a significant effect on the general development of the communications market, the licence decision is made by the Government.
