Finland’s path to becoming a leading 5G country: Registration open for the 3.5 GHz auction

Published 11.07.2018 | Updated 20.09.2018

The aim of the auction is to facilitate the development of new 5G technology into a high-performance wireless communications platform. 5G boosts digitalisation and meets the future wireless communications needs of user groups in a variety of sectors. Registrations must be submitted to FICORA by August 17, 2018.

The Government has today invited applications for licences for wireless broadband networks in the 3.5 GHz (3410−3800 MHz) frequency range. The licences are granted by auction. One enterprise, organisation or association may not be granted more than one licence. There are a total of three licences available for application.

Registrations must be submitted to FICORA by August 17, 2018 at 4.15 pm (GMT +3).

The spectrum auction is expected to begin on 26/09/2018. FICORA Regulation M64B and the project web pages contain more information about the registration and the auction process.

The Government decree on radio spectrum auction contains further information on the auctioning of radio spectrum. The decree defines, for example, the frequencies to be auctioned and their starting prices. Operations in accordance with the licences in the 3.5 GHz frequency range can be started once the frequency range is longer used for other operations.
