FICORA updating regulations in anticipation of 5G - several new radio devices exempted from licence

Published 08.01.2018

FICORA has updated Radio Frequency Regulation 4 and Regulation 15 on licence-exempt radio transmitters.

The changes in Radio Frequency Regulation 4 concern several sub-bands. One of the most important changes is that the current use of frequency band 3400−3800 MHz will be discontinued as of 31 December 2018. The changes are made in anticipation of the frequency needs for ultrafast 5G.

The update of Regulation 15 on licence-exempt radio transmitters include new bands for non-specific short-range radio transmitters, wideband data transmission equipment, digital PMR446 equipment, transport and traffic telematics devices, and medical body area network systems.

Moreover, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) were exempted from licence in the frequency band 5.9 GHz. The changes aim at reducing regulation and promoting the adoption of intelligent transportation systems.
