5G Momentum is a giant leap forward on Finland’s path to becoming the 5G technology leader

Published 31.05.2018

The 5G Momentum ecosystem was created to enable Finland to reach its goal of becoming number one in 5G technology. Through testing and trialling in the ecosystem, we can gain expertise in 5G, learn to identify future opportunities and facilitate collaboration. 5G Momentum accelerates the development of new innovative services for consumers, companies and public administration alike.

5G Momentum is a new collaborative network for 5G testing and trialling. Enabling fast and smooth access to the internet for devices, services and systems, 5G technology will be commercially deployed in 2020. The key benefits of 5G technology are its high capacity, short delays and low energy consumption.

“5G is a high-performance wireless communications platform designed for the ongoing digital revolution. The cross-sectoral collaborative ecosystem 5G Momentum enables fast and agile development of high-speed electronic communications services," explains Kirsi Karlamaa, Director-General of the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA).

Fast and reliable M2M communications make possible the development of completely new applications for the needs of, for example, communications, transport, robotics, and automation. Also the health sector, energy production and logistics require new secure real-time services with minimal delay.

The new electronic services created through testing and experimenting in the 5G Momentum ecosystem will benefit consumers, companies, research facilities, municipalities, cities and government organisations alike. Also companies from outside Finland are welcome to join the network: Finland's pro-trialling legislation and flexible regulation make it a fertile ground for 5G testing. Moreover, Finland boasts comprehensive and advanced mobile networks that fare well in international comparison.

5G Momentum is the shared project of government agencies in the administrative sector of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. FICORA coordinates the project. The project partners, FICORA, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, the Finnish Transport Agency and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, are also looking for ways to develop their own operations and regulation in their administrative sector.
