Reliable and secure Finnish fi-domain name celebrates 30 years
Finns have been able to use Finland’s own national domain name ending with .fi for 30 years. FICORA has operated the domain for almost 20 years after the administration of fi-domain names was transferred to FICORA in 1997.
The first Domain Name Act in 2003 was an important milestone. "The Act loosened the regulation on issuing fi-domain names. At the same time, FICORA introduced an automated domain name service. FICORA also gave up the preliminary investigation of domain name applications," explains Juhani Juselius, Head of Fi-Domain Names. Another important turning-point occurred in 2006 when private persons were invited to apply for domain names.
Currently there are more than 400,000 registered fi-domain names. "Liberalisation of fi-domain names piece by piece has substantially increased the number of fi-domain names. In 1997, there were only a few thousand registered fi-domain names," notes Juselius.
The most radical change in the history of fi-domain names took place a few months ago on 5 September 2016 as also foreign companies were invited to register fi-domain names. Previously banned domain names also became available for registration. On this date, Finland adopted the international registry-registrar model. "This means that after 5 September 2016, instead of FICORA, it is the registrar that provides all the services related to fi-domain names, including registrations, renewals, transfers, switching registrars, terminations, and updating details," explains Juhani Juselius.
FICORA manages the fi-domain name register, including all fi-domain names and fi-registrars. FICORA also maintains the fi-root name service and is responsible for the technical operation of fi-domain names. The protection of trademarks and business names registered in Finland remains the same. FICORA continues to resolve disputes related to fi-domain names free of charge. “FICORA guarantees the functionality and security of fi-domain names by supervising registrars, for instance," Juselius stresses.
