Nordic regulators call for forward looking telecommunications regulation

The Nordic regulators for electronic communications prepared a common position on the Digital Single Market Strategy in August last year. Now the Nordic NRAs have agreed on some additional key regulatory issues and sent their views to the Commission.

The current regulation is not sufficiently tailored to meet new challenges. The sector specific regulation could include lighter regulatory tools, which would emphasize the principle of proportionality.

In order to support market innovation, and new business models, the Nordic regulators recommend a cautious approach to regulation of new services (OTT). The Nordic regulators recommend reducing the regulatory burden where possible.

The Nordic regulators share the goal of ensuring that all citizens have rapid access to the next generation of mobile services. Harmonisation of spectrum is already a reality in Europe. The Nordic regulators believe that co-operation, which has already brought benefits, can be further developed, but not through further mandatory harmonisation.
