Radio microphone user - are your licence matters in order?Published 13.04.2015
The frequency bands subject to licence for wireless microphones are 174–230 MHz, 470–694 MHz and 694–789 MHz. Radio microphone use in the 694–790 MHz band will end completely on 31 December 2016 as the use of the frequencies will switch to wireless broadband. FICORA notifies licence holders of the changes concerning them.
Examples of significant groups using radio microphones subject to licence are schools, congregations, hotel and conference centres, and fitness centres. With the help of appropriate radio licences, users of wireless devices keep up-to-date with the changes occurring in the frequency bands. Also, licences provide important information on the actual utilisation rate of the frequencies. This helps FICORA in its frequency planning work. The information enables us to investigate, for example, radio interference more efficiently.
A licence to a radio microphone is always granted nationwide to the frequency bands chosen by the applicant. Since the frequencies allocated to radio microphones subject to licence are also used by terrestrial television, the operational frequency for a microphone must be chosen in such a manner the television reception in the region is not interfered. When choosing a frequency, you can use the search tool available at http://mikit.viestintavirasto.fi. The tool searches all the microphone frequencies that are suitable for the region.
Applying for a radio licence for wireless microphones can be done easily via FICORA's electronic services. The radio licence is valid immediately, if the applicant is using electronic identification. In addition to the electronic licence application, you can also download a traditional form from FICORA's online service and send it for handling either by email or as a letter.
The fee charged for a radio licence, on the basis a decree in force, is €18 per year for one microphone. The price of the licence is differentiated according to the number of devices so that 2 to 4 microphones cost €25.91 and e.g. 9 to 14 microphones €116.60 per year. When the number of microphones is 100 pcs. or more, the price remains the same, i.e. €1,230.73 per year.
Licence-exempt radio microphones operate on the frequencies 823–832 MHz, 863–865 MHz and 1785-1804.8 MHz. Radio microphones may operate only on these collective frequencies allocated by FICORA (see FICORA Regulation on collective frequencies for licence-exempt radio transmitters and on their use). In some radio microphones, the user can set the operational frequency for the microphone. The frequencies that are set and can be chosen for such a microphone must belong to the collective frequencies for radio microphones allocated by FICORA – otherwise, a radio licence is required for the use of the microphone.
