FICORA investigates the information security of devices

FICORA has requested that the main device manufacturers ensure that their devices are information-secure. The daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported on the matter on Sunday 23 February.

During the summer and fall of 2013, FICORA has investigated how international intelligence activities affect the information security of communications services offered to Finns. As further work in the investigation, FICORA has sent five device manufacturers in Finland a request to submit a declaration of the information security of their devices. The purpose of the request was to collect information that can be utilised in the information security assessment of devices. During 2014, FICORA continues to assess the information security of devices and informs on the results once they are clear.
FICORA acts as an expert for the national security authority in matters related to the information security of information systems and traffic. FICORA assesses the security of the devices used in information systems and that are connected to the systems. FICORA assesses, for example, the security of the devices used by the Finnish public administration. Public information at hand on the device as well as information separately provided by the manufacturer are, among others, taken into consideration when the security is assessed. In addition, FICORA investigates the security characteristics of the actual devices.
The request was sent to Insta DefSec Oy, Oy L M Ericsson Ab, Nokia Siemens Networks Oy, Nokia Oyj and Stonesoft Oyj. Insta DefSec Oy and Stonesoft Oyj submitted their declaration in June. The request for Oy L M Ericsson Ab, Nokia Siemens Networks Oy and Nokia Oyj was specified after further discussions for instance so that it only concerns products that are sold to Finns. After the specification, these companies also submitted their declaration.

At the end of 2013, FICORA sent a request also to Jolla Oy. The case is pending.
