Keep your computer up-to-date

The most important thing in protecting a computer is to keep the software installed up-to-date. The easiest way to do that is to enable automatic updates. Malware often infects computers through browser extensions that have not been updated.

Viruses and malware installed on a computer may cause harm and nuisance in many ways. Usually malware infects a computer through a web browser or links and attachments included in e-mail messages.

Stay up-to-date

It is very important to update the computer's operating system and software. Security updates are constantly published for browsers and, in particular, their extensions. You should set them to update automatically. Automatic updates should be enabled whenever they are available.

Use a firewall and anti-virus software

With a firewall, you can restrict the use of the internet connection, for example, by only allowing traffic for known applications.

Anti-virus software helps you detect malware residing in the computer's memory or on its hard drive. You should never disable anti-virus software updates because the effectiveness of the software depends on up-to-date virus definitions.

Web browsers are the most frequently attacked applications. You can make your browser more secure, for example, by disabling the browser extensions that are not in constant use.
