Licensed and licence-exempt radio equipment

Licensed and licence-exempt radio equipment

The use of all radio transmitters requires a licence unless the equipment is separately exempted from licensing. A licence is granted only for equipment that complies with the requirements.

Radio frequencies are allocated case-specifically to the equipment in the radio licence. FICORA collects an annual frequency fee on the use of radio transmitters subject to licensing.

Licence-exempt radio equipment

Receivers such as TV and radio receivers and other separate receivers do not require a licence. Furthermore, a licence is not required for all radio transmitters. However, radio equipment must meet the requirements so that interference in radiocommunication would be avoided.

Examples of licence-exempt radio equipment:

  • GSM and UMTS mobile phones
  • PR 27 and LA (CB) telephones
  • PMR446 radiotelephones
  • cordless telephones
  • satellite telephones
  • WLAN/RLAN equipment (2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz)
  • telecommand equipment operating on collective frequencies
  • equipment for detecting movement and equipment for alert
