Long-distance calls

Making a long-distance call to another telecommunications area

Long-distance telephony takes place between telecommunications areas. You can dial a long-distance call either with or without an operator prefix for long-distance calls.

You may also dial your long-distance call by using the operator prefix of the telecom operator of your choice. Or, you can select the telecom operator by making a pre-selection agreement with the telecom operator of your choice. If you have made a pre-selection agreement, the calls you have dialled without an operator prefix will automatically be directed to the network of the telecom operator of your choice.

The operator prefixes for long-distance calls start with 10 and they have 3 to 5 digits.

How to make a long-distance call

For example, if you call from Helsinki to Rovaniemi to the number 345 6789, this is how you select the operator prefix and the area code:

016 345 6789 A call without operator prefix
101 016 345 6789 - TeliaSonera Finland Oyj A call with long-distance operator prefix
1041 016 345 6789 - TDC Oy A call with long-distance operator prefix
109 016 345 6789 - DNA A call with long-distance operator prefix
90XYZ 016 345 6789 A call with general operator prefix (XYZ indicates the operator)

Unless you have made a pre-selection agreement and do not dial an operator prefix, the call will be forwarded to the network determined by the telecom operator you subscribe to.
